The pizzica: a journey of the soul

For the works on display, the artist delved into the sensations that in him, from Salento, were aroused and still aroused by the gestures and movements that accompany this ancestral dance. Luigi De Giovanni has always lived the pizzica but to better clarify his ideas, to create the works, he studied it to the point of immersing himself in the atmospheres that he suggests.

The pizzica is a woman, it is an expression of sensitivity, grace and suffering which still manifest themselves in movements and limping steps which apparently suggest joy but, in the reality of a time that no longer exists, hide anguish, hunger: the desire to have attention even if only for the contortions that involved and involve so much. The pizzica, which had religiosity and paganism in itself, has lost its original aspect, which brought fleets of tarantolates and pilgrims to San Paolo in Galatina, to become a spectacle that fills squares with a rhythm that reaches the belly, resonating in an amplification of the sensations that force you to make movements that make you forget your anguish and problems. It is as if Luigi De Giovanni heard the rolling of the drums which seem to have guided his brushstrokes which quickly moved on the canvas to leave sensations: traces of color effective in communicating the message. The artist wanted to talk about his feelings which take him back to the dusk in the farmyards of the town where the young people, exhausted by fatigue, found the strength to dance to the beating of drums and the players exhausted themselves and often injured themselves in the heat of the percussion incessant sounds that made the little pendants hanging on the frame vibrate to increase the color of the sound. In the works on display you can feel the emotions, the memories, the Genius and the Humus of Salento and you seem to hear the songs that expressed the moods and pangs of hunger that could bring you back to the painful pinch of the tarantula that forced you to dance.

An interesting exhibition that tells of the artist's love for his land and for the traditions that distinguish it. Federica Murgia
